BSE Pet Emergencies Pet Medical Insurance Selecting a cat Selecting a Dog Summertime Fun New Years Resolutions

New Year's resolutions to consider for your furry friends:

The new year is well under way and it is the time we reflect upon the past and resolve to make positive changes for the coming year. We at Westmount Animal Clinic would like you to reflect upon your companion animal (s) as well and make resolutions that improve the quality of life, safety and behavior of your four-legged friend (s).

take your pet to a veterinarian at least once a year for a complete physical exam.  This includes keeping recommended vaccinations  up-to-date and checking for dental health, lumps and bumps, etc. Pets older than 7 years should be seen twice a year and have a Senior Health Test .

►monitor your cat's and/or dog's weight and discuss proper nutrition and supplementation with your veterinarian.  Don't feed your pet table scraps, unhealthy treats and keep fresh water available at all times.

spay and neuter your pet.  Not only does it decrease the pet population, but it also has a lot of health benefits for the pet. Encourage friends, neighbors and acquaintances to have their pet(s) spayed or neutered as well.  We have gift certificates available that can be applied to any medical services or inventory here at the clinic.

► make sure your pets have current identification, whether a tag, tattoo or microchip.  In general, try not to let your pet roam free.  Keep it on a leash, fenced yard or your home. Make a lifetime investment and get your pets microchip identification (www.avidmicrochip.com).

►pet proof your house.  Keep poisons, electrical cords, poisonous plants, strings or ribbons out of reach.

►pay attention to your pet.  They get bored and may become destructive without attention.  Walk, play with or exercise your pet daily to provide mental and physical stimulation.

►be consistent with at-home health care for your pet.  Keep your cat(s) and dog(s) properly groomed in order to maintain basic hygiene, which results in better health.  Brush your pet's teeth and/or have a professional take care of your pet's dental hygiene.  Learn to clip your pet's toenails or bring them in for a nail trim. Long nails are uncomfortable and sometimes grow into foot pads or break, which can be very painful for your pet. We have 50% off nail trim days.  Call us for further information.
