GENERAL INFORMATION ON GROOMING Although it's often overlooked, grooming is an important part of your pet’s health program. Grooming improves your animal’s appearance and allows you and/or the groomer to carefully check areas for hair loss, inflammation, unusual tenderness or lumps under the skin that should be examined by your veterinarian. We believe every pet of every breed can benefit from regular grooming by a professional groomer, leaving their owners to provide maintenance grooming between appointments. Many pets maintain a healthy skin and hair coat with minimal assistance while others - especially some long-haired or curly-haired breeds - require regular brushing and professional grooming. Routine brushing and combing removes dead hair and dirt and prevents matting. It will stimulate the skin, and allow the natural oils to circulate to the coat. The need for bathing depends on the breed of dog, dog’s skin type and hair coat, your preference and just how dirty your pet gets. Bathing your dog every month or so isn’t unreasonable but brushing is needed almost every day for some breeds. Cats, like dogs, should be brushed on a daily basis. Most cats however do not need to be bathed unless they are being shown, or have been contaminated (e.g.. grease) or have a severe flea infestation. If you leave a long-coated pet ungroomed , the hair tangles and eventually mats will develop in their coats. These are painful and time consuming to remove. Grooming will become an unpleasant chore for you and a time of anxiety for your pet. It is much more sensible to spend a few minutes each day in a session that both you and your pet will find relaxing and rewarding. Do not be tempted to cut out the mat with scissors. This is very dangerous as you could cut your pet, resulting in a visit to the veterinarian. Aside from the risk, cutting out mats usually makes the grooming situation worse. It is nearly impossible to get all the way under the mat with scissors so you end up removing only a section of the mat, leaving the most tightly wound part, next to the skin, intact. This will rapidly develop into another big tangled mess. If you find that your pet has several mats bound very close to the skin, it is probably kindest to get you pet shaved by a groomer. Do :
