Keeping Pets Healthy. Educating People
At Westmount Animal Clinic, we care about the welfare of your pet, our family
understands that your pet is part of your family.
Our goal is to offer wellness programs as well as medical
and surgical healthcare for your dog and cat. We strive to ensure both you
and your pet enjoy the benefits of our collective experience and resources
The
beginning of the new year is the time people reflect upon the past
& resolve to make positive changes for the coming year
which should include our furry companions....regardless of what
they might think....

Following are some New Year’s
pet-olutions to consider for your furry friends that will improve or maintain
their health & our relationship with them:
At
the top of almost everyone’s resolution list is to find ways to save money. Pet
owners can help keep veterinary costs low by following a few simple guidelines
in the New Year.
 First,
keep your pets up to date on important vaccinations & dental cleaning
and parasite prevention. It is much less expensive to prevent a disease
than it is to treat it.
 Second,
try not to procrastinate & miss veterinary exams . If
your pet is injured/ill, delaying veterinary attention
could lead to higher expenses!
 Third,
it is important to have a good line of communication with your veterinarian &
veterinary staff. Keeping them up to date on
your pet's health
& behaviour changes could catch problems earlier, at
more treatable stages.
 Investing
in pet insurance or starting a pet health savings plan as the new year begins
might help avoid financial strain if your pet is sick or even avoid the
unpleasant thought of an “economic euthanasia.”
Next on many resolution lists is the promise to exercise more,
stay healthy and lose weight.
Review
your pet's diet with the veterinary
team to make sure it is meeting your pet's
needs.
Take
your dog for a walk every day & play with
your cat daily to
provide mental and physical stimulation.
Keep
cats indoors to provide a safe, healthy and long life.
Finally, a great resolution for all pet owners is to promise to discuss all
aspects of your pet’s care with your veterinarian before acting on information
found online.
Even though
Internet searches and discussions with online friends might seem to be helpful,
there is a lot of misinformation present on the web.
Avoid using “Dr. Google” as your only source of pet health recommendations.

The field of veterinary medicine has evolved
significantly over the last few decades and has been exposed to many of the
same technological advances used in the field of human medicine. Two such
relatively new technologies are
Laser Surgery &
Laser Therapy!
At Westmount we have been offering these progressive new options to our
clients since 2005 with tremendous results.
Laser surgery is our primary surgical method for safe and comfortable
treatment while laser therapy provides a safe, non-invasive
and effective treatment to increase mobility, wound healing and post surgery
rehab.

Though there is no cure
for this debilitating disease, there is much we can do to manage the condition
and control the pain through

: By the age of three, some 80 % of all
dogs & 70 % of all cats show signs of
dental disease, which can lead to
the more serious problems of heart, lung, and kidney disease.
Periodontal
disease can be prevented and treated!
No other procedure
performed on small animals does more to help patients than periodic
teeth cleaning and after care.
Proper nutrition is central to
sound oral health. Along with good nutrition, an annual dental
prophylaxis included in your pet's regular health care program will help
maintain your pet's overall health and prevent complications!
Parasite
Control is an
essential part of preventative pet health care program.
Internal
and external parasites are a significant cause of
disease and discomfort in animals & can pose a serious threat to
the health of people. We encourage regular fecal testing and
parasite control/prevention in accordance with the recommendations of
the
Companion Animal Parasite Council
:
Diet is the foundation of health - nothing can replace a healthy
diet when it comes to promoting health and warding off both acute and
chronic disease.
Proper nutrition is essential at all stages of
your pet’s life. Nutritional imbalances can lead to a variety of
physical and behavioral problems. While feeding a wholesome
nutritious pet food makes an enormous impact on the health of your pets
,adding daily
supplements to their diet based on the individual dietary
requirements insures your pets have everything they need to ward
off immune stressors and disease!
